AHAs vs. BHAs: What’s Right for Your Skin?

Choosing Between AHAs and BHAs in Your Skincare Routine

When it comes to choosing between AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) and BHAs (Beta Hydroxy Acids) in your skincare routine, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the options. Both of these acids work wonders for exfoliation, but they have different strengths and suit different skin types. Let’s break down how each works and which might be right for you.

What Are AHAs?

AHAs, like glycolic acid (from sugarcane) and lactic acid (from fermented plants), are water-soluble acids that exfoliate the surface of your skin. They work by loosening the bonds between dead skin cells, encouraging them to shed and revealing smoother, brighter skin underneath.

Best For:

  • Normal to Dry Skin: AHAs are hydrating and help improve texture and tone, making them great for dry or aging skin.
  • Hyperpigmentation and Fine Lines: Regular use of AHAs can lighten dark spots and reduce the appearance of fine lines.

What Are BHAs?

BHAs, like salicylic acid (from willow bark), are oil-soluble, meaning they penetrate deep into pores to clear out excess oil and debris. This makes them perfect for addressing acne and blackheads.

Best For:

  • Oily and Acne-Prone Skin: BHAs get deep into pores to clear out clogs and reduce excess oil, preventing future breakouts.
  • Blackheads and Enlarged Pores: If you’re dealing with clogged pores, BHAs are your go-to.

How to Use Them:

  • AHAs: Start with a low concentration (5–10%) once or twice a week, gradually increasing to every other day if your skin tolerates it. Always follow up with sunscreen during the day as AHAs can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
  • BHAs: For acne or blackhead concerns, use a BHA product (usually around 1–2% salicylic acid) 2-3 times a week, either as a toner or serum. You can increase to daily use if your skin tolerates it well.

Pro Tip: You can use both AHAs and BHAs in your routine, but alternate them or use on different days to avoid irritation.
